Africa is Not a Country features fine art photography that reflects the culture, people, and landscape of  Africa’s different countries.  The theme of our exhibit is that Africa is not a country—it is a continent composed of 55 culturally, racially, religiously, politically, and geographically diverse countries.  The theme was inspired, in part, by a general recognition of an all-too-common lack of knowledge about Africa, demonstrated by laypeople and national political figures alike. We hope that the exhibit will be as educational as it is aesthetically appealing.

Proceeds will support a permanent exhibit to showcase the history of the recently discovered early 18th century African Burying Ground, located just a few blocks from the Cultural Center. This African Burying Ground is the only such documented cemetery of its era in New England.  With the support of the Portsmouth City Council, the African Burying Ground Committee is currently working to develop a memorial park on the 6,500 square-foot site, to be entitled, “We Stand in Honor of Those Forgotten.”  (For more information, see: )

The exhibition will be on display at SAACC from November 1 through November 30, 2012.  Admission is free.  SAACC is located in the Discover Portsmouth Center at 10 Middle Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  Our hours are Monday to Friday from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 10:00 – 4:00 p.m. and by appointment (603-430-6027).
