Welcome to the Africa Is Not A Country website. The Seacoast African American Cultural Center (SAACC) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire is currently hosting a Photography exhibition entitled “Africa Is Not A Country” from November 1 to November 30, 2012.
Over 80 juried photographs from 25 different African countries comprise this outstanding collection of work. The 27 photographers selected to participate hail from as far away as Senegal, South Africa and England, across the United States, and, of course, from New Hampshire. There are landscape scenes, images of people, and shots of wildlife that capture the enticing diversity of this fabulous continent.
Proceeds will support a permanent exhibit to showcase the history of the recently discovered early 18th century African Burying Ground, located just a few blocks from the Cultural Center. This Burying Ground, formerly called the “Negro Burying Ground,” is the only known African Burying Ground that dates as far back as 1705 in all of New England.
Please explore this site to learn about our exhibit and the accompanying lectures and film screening.
You will never mistake Africa for a country after seeing this exhibition.
